If the power battery attenuates to 80%, what to do?

Power battery attenuates

According to various materials, there are numerous types of lithium batteries. Currently, the predominant applications consist of ternary lithium batteries and lithium phosphate batteries. Natural attenuation is a common characteristic of lithium batteries. As per relevant national regulations, if the power battery of an electric vehicle deteriorates to 80% of its new battery state, it loses its viability as a new energy vehicle power battery. Consequently, it should be replaced and undergo cascade utilization.

If the Power battery attenuates there are two methods of replacement: one is to scrap the vehicle and replace it with a new one, and the other is to replace the power battery. Which of these options is more cost-effective?

Regarding cost, the price of electric vehicle power batteries remains relatively high. For instance, the price of ternary lithium batteries is approximately 1,100 yuan per 1KWh. If the replacement is done at one’s own expense, the cost can be quite significant. Firstly, the warranty cycle for power batteries in non-operating electric vehicles is 8 years or 120,000 kilometers, and many new energy vehicle companies have extended it to 8 years or 150,000 kilometers, with some even offering a lifetime warranty. If any quality issues arise with the power battery during the warranty period, including natural attenuation exceeding 20%, the car company will replace it free of charge.

Power battery attenuates: Secondly, the power battery of an electric vehicle naturally deteriorates to less than 80% over an extended period of time. By that time, the owner should have already replaced the car, leaving no opportunity to bear the expense of battery replacement. Considering the typical timeframe for Chinese consumers to change cars, very few individuals continue driving beyond 200,000 kilometers. Therefore, consumers need not worry about the cost of subsequent battery replacement. A significant quantity of new energy electric vehicle chassis batteries, bus batteries, automobile battery modules, various after-sales lithium battery packs, waste batteries, and other electric vehicle lithium batteries are being purchased in bulk.

Power battery attenuates

From the perspective of power battery performance, it is generally accepted that the battery used in lithium battery electric vehicles will attenuate to 80% of its new state after approximately 800 full charge and discharge cycles. Electric vehicles using ternary lithium batteries can achieve an operating mileage of 400 kilometers, corresponding to 320,000 kilometers after 800 full charge and discharge cycles. Taking into account that actual mileage will exceed working conditions, a 20% reduction is applied, resulting in an effective driving distance of 256,000 kilometers. Since the battery continues to degrade, the driving range gradually decreases by 20%. Based on calculations, when an electric vehicle equipped with a ternary lithium battery has traveled for 205,000 kilometers, the battery will have decayed to 80%, indicating its retirement.

Power battery attenuates: A lithium iron phosphate battery car will deteriorate to 80% capacity after undergoing 2,000 full charge and discharge cycles. Using the same method as mentioned above, an electric car with a driving range of 300 kilometers will reach less than 80% capacity after covering 384,000 kilometers. Some may question the credibility of this calculation; however, it is worth noting that BYD e6 taxis equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries typically travel 350,000 kilometers before requiring battery replacement. Overall, whether it is a new energy vehicle or not, a car that has been driven for ten years is generally considered for replacement.

Additionally, as the scale of production expands, the price of batteries continues to decline each year. In a few years’ time, the battery price will undoubtedly be lower than the current level. Therefore, estimating the cost of battery replacement in the future using current battery prices is not scientifically accurate.
